OBTAINING VERMONT STATE POLICE
REPORTS/PHOTOGRAPHS

The Vermont Criminal Information Center (VCIC) is the repository for Vermont State Police investigative reports and photographs taken in conjunction with investigations. Law enforcement investigative reports and photographs are exempted from the Vermont Public Records Law.  However, the Vermont State Police makes every effort to release their investigative reports and photographs to the public.

Investigative reports and photographs are generally not released to the public under any of the following circumstances:

  • The incident is under active investigation.
  • The incident is under active prosecution.
  • The report contains information which may compromise another ongoing investigation.
  • The report involves juvenile subjects.
  • The photographs involve dead bodies.

HOW DO I OBTAIN A VERMONT STATE POLICE REPORT?

(PLEASE NOTE: This does not include accident/crash reports. Accident reports are supplied (for a $15.00 fee) by the Department of Motor Vehicles, Accident Division, 120 State Street, Montpelier, VT 05603-0001.)

  • Contact the local Vermont State Police Station which handled the case and obtain the case number for the Incident.
  • Write to the Department at the address below requesting the report by Case Number.  Include in your letter the reason for your request.
  • There is a fee of $15 for each report requested. Include with your request a check made payable to the Department of Public Safety.
  • Your request will be reviewed by the Vermont State Police. The report will be mailed to you or you will receive a written denial. Payment will be returned for reports which cannot be released.

HOW DO I OBTAIN VERMONT STATE POLICE PHOTOGRAPHS?

  • Contact the local Vermont State Police Station which handled the case and obtain the case number for the incident.
  • Call the Department at 802-241-5577 to determine whether or not photographs for that case are on file. You will be advised of the number of photographs that are on file.
  • Write to the Department at the address below requesting the photographs by Case Number.  Include in your letter the reason for your request.
  • There is a fee of $5 for each photograph requested.  Include with your request a check made payable to the Vermont Department of Public Safety.
