If there is a fire in your home you need to get out safely.

Practice home escape plans with your family. It's an important way to stay safe.

  • Find two ways out of each room in your home.
  • Crawl under smoke.
  • Have an outside meeting place.
  • Never hide from firefighters during a fire.
  • Have your parents make sure your smoke detector is always working.

Parents

Fire is always unexpected. Planning for a fire emergency is an important part of home safety and practicing home escape plans is important for every family.

Plan your family’s escape. Involve all members of the family. Remember the young and very old may need special help to stay safe. Practice can save the lives of you and your family.

Fire drills can be fun family events. Hold drills at different times of the day and night, and in the middle of different daily routines.

Practice using the second way out of bedrooms and other rooms when it is safe to do so.

Windows can be important "escape hatches" in a fire. Be sure that they open in an emergency without special effort or tools.

Have an outside meeting place that will work in winter as well as other seasons.

Smoke alarms are inexpensive effective devices that alert people when fire occurs. Install some in your home and test them regularly to make sure they work.
