Short Range Goals

  • Reduce the percent of crashes at controlled intersections to 18% by 2005.
  • Reduce work zone crashes to a three-year average of 25 by 2005.

Long Range Goals

  • Reduce the percent of crashes at controlled intersections to 17% by 2010.
  • Reduce work zone crashes to a three-year average of 22 by 2010.

The Governor's Highway Safety Program has no activity within the engineering facet of highway safety efforts. The Agency of Transportation performs all highway design and construction as well as all traffic control engineering in Vermont. VTrans personnel identified these measures of progress as part of the Highway Safety Policy Council.

Although the Highway Safety Office has no direct input to design and treatment of roadways in Vermont there are some efforts underway that affect safety on our roadways. Roundabouts are becoming more prevalent in Vermont and this will help to alleviate congestion and conflicting traffic at those intersections where they are constructed. Action has been completed on putting rumble strips along all controlled-access highways in Vermont. These two actions will help reduce crashes in Vermont.

VTrans is committed to continue improving the safety on Vermont roadways for all users. Toward this end, the Safety Management System concept is being implemented in Vermont. In addition 154 and 164 penalty funds are being used for hazard elimination projects.
