Program Description:
"An attack on our food system can happen anytime, anywhere. Training and preparing today could protect your community from economic and agricultural destruction. Foreign Animal Disease Response is an agro-terrorism preparedness course for responders, certified by the US Department of Homeland Security and approved by the USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service." --AgTerror.org Responder Training

Do you remember pictures of pyres of livestock when the UK was eradicating Foot and Mouth Disease in 2001? This course focuses on the realities of a response to a highly contagious animal disease like Foot and Mouth Disease where stop movement orders and mass euthanasia and disposal are necessary. Responders must be familiar with the scope of quarantine, types of personal protective equipment, methods of euthanasia and disposal, and how to manage cleaning and disinfection operations during this type of response. A review of definitions and best practices in each of these areas is provided on field notes that are available for all responders.

Training officers will be provided with a training manual, CD, and copies of the field notes. To complete certification, training officers will present a 5-10 minute teach-back at the conclusion of the course.
Program presenters:

Sam Comstock, UVM Extension Livestock Specialist, and Julie Smith, UVM Extension Dairy Specialist, are certified master trainers in Foreign Animal Disease Response. They were trained by the Kirkwood Community College's Ag-Terror Preparedness Center personnel in May 2006.
