TROOP D - BRATTLEBORO

The Vermont State Police Brattleboro barracks is located in Windham County (estimated population 43,000), which is in the southeast corner of Vermont. The Brattleboro barracks is a sub-station of the Troop D Headquarters, located in the town of Rockingham. Uniformed staffing consists of three Sergeants and nine Troopers. The sworn personnel assigned to the Brattleboro barracks serve as the primary law enforcement agency for sixteen towns, which cover a total of 960 square miles in Windham and Bennington counties.

The Brattleboro station is commanded by Lieutenant Kraig LaPorte. In addition to the address and phone number which appears at the right, Lieutenant LaPorte may be reached by e-mail by clicking this link - E-mail Lieutenant LaPorte

As the primary law enforcement agency for these towns, the State Police are tasked with enforcing Vermont's motor vehicle and criminal laws. The State Police also provide backup and assistance to the police departments in the town of Brattleboro, Dover, Vernon and Wilmington.

Also located in the Brattleboro barracks patrol area are:

  • I91, a major north/south oriented interstate highway,
  • the Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant
  • C&S Wholesale Grocers, one of Vermont's largest employers,
  • the Haystack Ski Area,
  • the Mount Snow Ski Area,
  • the Stratton Mountain Ski Area, and
  • the Harriman Reservoir, the largest wholly contained body of water within the State of Vermont.

The presence of Interstate 91 makes Windham County "The Gateway to Vermont" as it provides a convenient avenue to scenic Vermont for our neighbors to the south. As such, the Troopers of the Brattleboro barracks deal with a high traffic volume, particularly during weekend travel times.

As you will see in the following pages, the Troopers of the Brattleboro barracks are highly dedicated to the goal of crash reduction by ridding southeastern Vermont's roadways of those who drive while impaired, increasing speed enforcement efforts through the use of new equipment and tactics, and improving the occupant protection usage rate by vigorously enforcing Vermont's seatbelt and child restraint laws.
