HISTORY OF THE BRATTLEBORO
STATION
The Brattleboro State Police barracks in the late 1940's was a small room on Flat Street where one dispatcher, Lucie Hudson, did paperwork and took telephone messages for one Trooper - Charlie Cadett.
In the early days, before police had radios, lights were installed, one at the Latchis Hotel in Brattleboro, and the other at the Town Hall in Putney. If a complaint came in, the lights were turned on. The Trooper on duty made it a point to drive past the lights every so often. If the light was on, he called in by phone to get the complaint. In 1972, the barracks moved to a small building on Route 9 in West Brattleboro where it still remains.
In the mid 1990’s all dispatching services were moved to the Troop Headquarters at Rockingham. Judy Dale, the second dispatcher the station had, remained at the barracks as a clerk until her retirement in 1998. The current staffing of the station consists of 10 Troopers, 3 Sergeants,
1 Detective Trooper, two Detective Sergeants, a Lieutenant, 2 full time
clerks and 1 part time clerk. Today, the barracks staff deals with a multitude of problems. I91 brings heavy traffic from Southern New England into Vermont. Much of this traffic is in the form of tourists. Troopers are the primary law enforcement officers for 13 area towns, and investigate all crimes from thefts to homicides. |
