The Drug Task Force is charged primarily with investigating drug trafficking throughout the state. The majority of officers assigned to Task Force are assigned to either the Northern or Southern Drug Task Force and concentrate their efforts on mid- to upper-level drug dealers. The Unit is responsible for the "undercover" aspect of policing statewide. While the main emphasis is on drug crimes, undercover officers also may work on cases ranging from stolen property to murder as the need for their expertise dictates. This Task Force concept has proven to be one of the most successful initiatives ever undertaken by the law enforcement community. A diversion investigator has recently been added to the Task Force. Diversion of narcotic drugs is considered to be a major problem in Vermont. It is the responsibility of the diversion investigator to investigate serious abuse, to assist BCI detectives in diversion investigations, and to explore new technology and legislation which may streamline the investigations of those offenses. |
