Vermont State Police The Office of Professional Development represents the Director of the Vermont State Police. The role of the Office is to advocate for the training and development needs of the department, encourage command level support of its programs, and effectively communicate the goals and objectives of the Office with all members of the department. The creation of the Office of Professional Development signaled an end to what was formerly known as the Training Division. While the previous model for law enforcement training served the Vermont State Police well, the future training and development of our members requires a model that is all encompassing, progressive, efficient and cost effective. Moreover, it is essential that we create high-quality learning experiences for all members and develop “directed” training programs for special circumstances. The recruiting and hiring of qualified applicants and the retention of current members is also a vital component in the success of the organization. The current employment process has served us extremely well and we will build on this success to ensure that we continue to attract the most qualified candidates. Lastly, the framework of our organization must be supported by a solid foundation of policy and procedure that upholds the institutional excellence of the Vermont State Police. To this end, policy development and review will be comprehensive and organized in a manner that best serves the interests of our members. Effective leadership is not accomplished through isolation; it comes from teams of individuals working toward a straightforward vision and shared expectations regarding what needs to be done and who is responsible. The Office of Professional Development will establish its leadership role through a systematic focus on creating a model of professional development within the Vermont law enforcement community. Our success, however, requires the broad support of those to whom the Office of Professional Development is committed to serve – the men and women of the Vermont State Police. |
