INCIDENT: Attempting to Elude

CITY, STATE OF RESIDENCE: Bridport, VT

SUMMARY OF INCIDENT

On 10/27/09 at approximately 0057 hours a Trooper from the Bradford State Police Barracks observed a vehicle traveling south on US Rt 5 in the Town of Newbury at a high  rate of speed. The Trooper observed the vehicle to have been traveling at 78 mph in a posted 50 mph zone. When the Trooper attempted to initiate a motor vehicle stop, the vehicle refused to stop. The vehicle continued traveling south on US Rt 5 in Newbury Village. At one point the vehicle drove onto the lawn of a nearby residence. The pursuit continued for a short distance until the vehicle pulled to the shoulder of the roadway. The two occupants were subsequently placed into custody.

The operator of the vehicle, Timothy J. Williams 21, of Bridport, was later issued a citation to appear in Orange County District Court to answer the charges of Attempting to Elude, Careless and Negligent Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Possession of Marijuana.  Williams was also issued several traffic tickets.

The passenger of the vehicle, Richard Souza, 22 of  Hardwick, was lodged at the St. Johnsbury Correctional Center for an outstanding warrant.  A search of the vehicle revealed two ounces of marijuana.
