ROBBERY SAFETY TIPS FOR VERMONT STORES

If approached in a robbery situation:

  • Never resist an armed robber; there is a chance the suspect is acting under the influence of drugs and may not act rationally during a robbery attempt.
  • Call 911 or your local emergency number if you have experienced a robbery.
  • Be a good witness; try to document any and all information about the crime as soon as possible, including a detailed description of the individual(s) and any vehicle(s) involved (use this Robbery Report Form).

Proactive steps to increase security of your business:

  • Make sure your store has adequate exterior lighting.
  • If possible have two employees working during dark hours.
  • Install surveillance cameras, or if you have an existing surveillance system, test to see that it is in good working order or install “dummy” type cameras.
  • Keep a low balance in the cash register (if possible keep cash in an identifiable band that can be clearly identified if recovered), place excess cash in a safe or deposit it as soon as possible.
  • Install an adhesive type height chart near the exit of the building, which will aid in identifying the height of the individual.
  • Make sure the sales counter can be seen clearly. Don't put up advertisements, displays, posters or other items on windows or doors that might obstruct the view of the register from inside or outside your business. The police cruising by your store need to see in.
  • Report any suspicious activity at your place of business to local police.
